Layout Manager is here!
If you have not noticed, you can now access the layout manager in your admin. You’ll have to activate it and there seems to be a few little quirks I’ve found. I’m still looking into it. One thing I noticed right off is that it added a extra tab to my page. Easy to fix, just navigate to it in the Layout manager and disable it. The second thing I found which will probably only effect me, haha, is that the class .three, has been replaced it seems with #zone-f. This will cost me an hour fixing all my sites that were using .three, but I expected that there had to be some quirks. I have not looked through all my pages yet but I’ll let you know if I find anything to look out for.
Note: I use nth-child attributes, and this is causing much problems for me, because it seems there has been a class inserted into the order of things. So, no body else will probably experience this. If you read my blog on nth-child and have actually tried this. As far as I can tell, only one new class has been introduced. This would cause every thing to be kicked down one. So, nth-child-1, will now be “2″, and “odd” will be “even.” Good luck!
Charles Delamain
Prosocialgo sends out our most sincere prayers for the Family of Charles Delamain of and his co-workers at Socialgo and other. Charles Delamain COO of SocialGO/Bright Things, was killed in a auto accident last night. Here is a comment from the owners site
Dominic Wheatley, CEO commented: ‘Charles was a dear friend whom I had known since we were at school. He loved life and lived it to the full. Charles was courageous, loyal and gifted. He excelled at so many things – as a soldier, husband, father, businessman and friend to so many. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him and our thoughts and prayers go to his family. ‘
We wish comfort for the family and SG, if your the praying type, we posted a prayer here
Pro Socialgo Podcast 8: Custom CSS for Nav Bar and Illustrator Tutorial
This podcast focuses on the Nav bar in Socialgo. You can take a look at Podcast 6&7 if you need help with firebug and how to use/make background images. There is also a Blog on Pro Socialgo that lays out this process with code.
Custom CSS Nav Bar Podcast 08 .mov
Pro Socialgo Podcast 7: Custom CSS tricks and Illustrator tutorial.
Today we look at the images in Podcast 6 and break them down. They were created in Illustrator so you’ll see a few tricks for creating 60’s style type fonts. Also we do a slower review of part 6, because it was a little rushed and a few have said they didn’t get half of it. There is a blog post on pro socialgo that lays out the custom CSS we use in both Podcast 6 & 7
Pro Socailgo Podcast 6: Custom CSS for your Social Network
ALERT: Blog coming tomorrow that will have the code and such. Here it is. This podcast covers the title and header areas of your network. We will make a rollover logo and a cool repeating header image. It moves a bit fast. I’ve been getting complaints that they are too big in size, and instead of loose quality for my friends watching on TV, I’ll cut them down into series. This will be one of THREE. The next one will look at the navbar and maybe images, and how I made them.
Notes: Yes! I don’t know what this “(” is called. But I do know what this “:” is, I think .. I hope. Big note:: I copy CSS from Firebug Firefox plugin. I actually don’t like to do this, I prefer HTML SCOUT from widget Laboratory. BUT, you have to remove the line numbers when you do it the way I did it in the Podcast. I don’t think I say this.
Enjoy! Next one will be in a few days.
Week in review, a few days late.. as I tend to be
Ohh, things are heating up at Socialgo and Widget laboratory . I’m drooling as I type. Just a guess, but I think both Widget and SG are giving us something big this month (fingers crossed on widget). Widget has to launch their platform first and I’m sure it’ll come with a few widgets. They said nothing about it this last week, but I’ve got a feeling.. or is that this stale coffee.
Workshop tomorrow, see what a real Texan looks like ME
The socialgo workshop focusing on designing your network will be tomorrow, that is April 7 at 6 p.m. GMT (1 p.m. EST, 10 a.m. PDT). Take a look at the details here on owners socialgo and, yes, I will be making a appearance to talk about custom CSS. Hope to meet you there and say howdy.
layout manager
LM looks to be done from the tutorial on WL, Evil Genius makes me sound like a bumbling hick with his smooth vid. Layout Manager is really a incredible tool, combine it with custom CSS, and I don’t think there is much you can’t do. Once it comes out, I’ll be creating some networks trying to push it to it’s limits. I’ll make some deep tutorials with it, maybe you can throw your ideas in of what you’d like to see.
READ THIS NING OWNERS
If you have not yet, jet over to Widget lab and read the TRUST IS NOT A FOUR LETTER WORD from CEO Dominic Wheatley. It’s very telling of the intentions behind socialgo, where they are headed and where they will and will not take us. You’ve probably seen Ning’s new facebook wanna be with other peoples hard work as their base, but SG really looks to be on the right track here. Especially for someone like me who has already lined up clients for white label sites (waiting for layout manager), who has to have some agreement, even promise, which this is, a open contract of sorts, to run a efficient business that won’t end up embarrassing the the u know what out of me and my company. I printed it out and will do a in depth post on it. Right now I’ve only read through it once.
New Templates!! (applause)
Ok, they are still a bit general, but templates always will be and should be. They are the cornerstone of your network, pick a color scheme you like or a header you like and build on it. Saves some time and gives a little nudge.
On Email alerts for members
I wanted to make sure everyone saw this comment from mike on the last post I actually removed, because I realized I was asleep while I was writing it!! ha. But it was about improving the way members of our networks opt in and out of emal alerts.. Mike made some points that I wasn’t aware of, I guess I’m not a member and have not used the import contacts.. I should watch my P’s and Q’s..:)
Just FYI, then ‘unsubscribe’ link which you will now notice at the bottom of all network emails does the same thing as removing alert requests and alert messages from your profile. If you leave a network and they use the contact importer / invite members to event / group, and you click ‘unsubscribe’ it effectively puts that exact email address into an optout black list.
For privacy reasons, we don’t tell the network owners whether someone on their invite list has opted out of emails, it just looks like they all got sent.
We’re looking at other ways of improving emails which I’m sure will be announced when ready – the most important thing is that users’ password reset emails come through.
Socialgo Concierge
Wow wee… $140 a month for the new Concierge Plan from Socialgo. You can read about it here on the socialgo Owners site. This would be for someone that either knows close to nothing, or has a good client base finds it more profitable to do next to nothing in maintaining their Socialgo. I guess when you add up the extra space and white label etc.. it’s not that bad of a deal. I think as Socialgo’s API opens up and more third party development steps in you will see allot of big companies using the engine to run parts or all of their sites. I’ve anticipated this with others and have found it quiet a easy sell to clients who are existing desiring a closer community with their site. Once you make a comparison to Facebook, their on the train, because every one is on facebook and loves it.
Cool it with the Spam your effecting me
Why in the world would a Social Network owner message all members 5 6 times a day? Get a life! All your doing is running off your members and according to Socialgo causing MY member emails to be tagged as spam. Don’t think I won’t find you. Here is their new policy.
New socialgo Templates
New Socialgo Templates now available in the Socialgo admin area. Ok, they are still very much in the same vein as the others, but a little more stylish. There are quit a few to choose frome and may provide a better starting place for your Network
